BTS Say No to the Grammys: No 2027 Submission

On July 29, all seven members shared a coordinated statement through their individual Instagram Stories confirming the decision.
The members expressed their hope that music could be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being separated or defined according to region or language.
Their announcement followed the Recording Academyβs introduction of a new category titled Best Asian Pop Music Performance. The category was created for contemporary popular music originating from, or widely recognised within, Asian marketsβincluding K-pop, J-pop and C-popβwith meaningful use of an Asian language.
Although the Recording Academy described the category as an attempt to recognise more Asian artists, BTSβs decision raised a much bigger question: should artists whose music already competes globally be separated into a region-based category?
The decision means BTS will not submit ARIRANG, its singles or any other eligible music for the 2027 Grammy Awards.
Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. later said that he was saddened by the decision but respected BTSβs choice. He also clarified that the new category was intended to expand recognition and that Asian artists would technically remain eligible for the major general categories.
But BTSβs message was clear.
Music should not need a regional box before it can be recognised as music.
For years, BTS worked toward Grammy recognition while breaking barriers across the global music industry. Choosing to step awayβduring one of the strongest and most successful group eras of their careerβshows that they no longer need validation from an institution that repeatedly struggled to recognise their impact properly.
ARMY NOTE:
The fandom may call them the βScammys,β but BTSβs official statement was calm, united and focused on the principle behind the decision.
They did not attack other Asian artists or dismiss the importance of representation. Instead, they questioned why globally successful music should be separated according to geography or language.
Seven members.
One shared statement.
No submission.
BTS paved the wayβand this time, they chose not to walk through the door the Grammys offered them.
